UPDATE – Status Of Minnesota Driver’s License And REAL ID |
As reported recently in the news, the federal government has denied the request by the State of Minnesota for an extension to the REAL ID standards. Two other states also saw similar requests denied – New Mexico and Washington. While three states were granted extensions – Louisiana, New York and New Hampshire. One stumbling block for Minnesota is it must repeal a 2009 law put in place to address concerns over federal overreach. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has promised at least 120 days notice before a REAL ID compliant identification card is required for domestic air travel. The DHS has NOT yet given notice, so the 120 day clock is NOT counting down at this time. However, as of January 1, 2016 the Minnesota driver’s licenses are not sufficient identification for the general public to be allowed on U.S. Military bases and other semi-restricted federal facilities. This may affect companies with business in Washington, D.C., but will likely have very little affect elsewhere.
