Delta Introduces New SkyMiles Program For 2015 |
Delta Air Lines today announced changes to its frequent flier program (SkyMiles) for 2015. Passengers will begin earning award miles based on the fare paid, rather than how far they travel. No longer will a flier who pays the cheapest fare in coach be able to earn the same number of miles as a fellow passenger who purchased a seat in Business / First Class, or a last-minute fare. This new frequent flier model is similar to new SkyTeam partner Virgin America, and also lower-cost airlines such as JetBlue and Southwest. Depending on the traveler’s status, travelers will earn between 5 and 11 miles per dollar of their base ticket, plus airline surcharges. By using Delta’s co-branded SkyMiles credit card, travelers can earn an additional 2 miles per dollar. Beginning in 2015, Delta will make other changes to its program including increasing the number of seats that can be redeemed for the lowest amount of miles, increasing the number of reward tiers, and allowing travelers to redeem one-way reward trips.
