Frontier Airlines is making big changes to its network — and they’re not necessarily pretty.  The Denver-based ultra-low-cost carrier filed plans this week to exit 43 routes, a significant number even for a carrier that’s known to shake up its network more often than most airlines.

Boeing Names New CEO After Losses More Than Triple (Source: CNN)
Robert “Kelly” Ortberg, former CEO of avionics supplier Rockwell Collins, will be Boeing’s new CEO, replacing Dave Calhoun, who has been under fire for many of the company’s manufacturing and safety concerns and other controversies.

Southwest Airlines Schedules First Red-Eye Flights (Source: Simple Flying)
Southwest Airlines has scheduled its first “redeye” routes to begin in February 2025. Southwest’s first late-night flights will run from Las Vegas to Baltimore and Orlando, Fla.; from Las Angeles to Baltimore and Nashville, Tenn.; and from Phoenix to Baltimore.

Delta: IT Outage Cost $500M In Five Days (Source: Business Travel News)
The Microsoft and CrowdStrike IT outage that started July 19 and severely affected airline operations, particularly those of Delta Air Lines, has cost the carrier $500 million over five days, Delta CEO Ed Bastian said during a Wednesday appearance on CNBC.  Delta in particular struggled to recover from the outage, canceling thousands of flights over the next few days. 

Spirit Airlines Wants You To Get Comfy With New Fare Class Bundles, Quicker Boarding (Source: USA Today)
Spirit Airlines is updating its fare buckets and introducing new options for increased comfort onboard. The airline announced Tuesday that the changes are meant to make it a “friendlier, more comfortable and cost-effective” experience to fly with Spirit.

The aviation industry is adjusting to “a new normal” of scorching temperatures during the busy summer travel period, said Kevin Burke, president and CEO at Airports Council International—North America.

Tokyo High-Rise Will Be Home To A Raffles Hotel (Source: Travel Weekly)
Raffles Hotels & Resorts has announced plans to plant a flag in Tokyo.  The hotel, expected to open in 2028, will be part of the redevelopment of Tokyo’s World Trade Center (WTC) in the city’s Hamamatsucho district. The Raffles Tokyo will occupy the top 46 floors of the building and have 130 guestrooms, including 27 suites.

New Marriott Property Opens On Florida’s West Coast (Source: MeetingsNet )
Adjacent to the Bradenton Area Convention Center, the 252-room Palmetto Marriott also has more than 9,000 square feet of meeting space of its own.  Mid-July saw the debut of the Palmetto Marriott in Palmetto, Fla., connected by an indoor skybridge to the Bradenton Area Convention Center on the northern shore of the Manatee River across from downtown Bradenton.

The Department of Transportation is proposing a new rule that would ban airlines from charging parents to sit with their young children. Under the proposal, released Thursday, U.S. and foreign carriers would be required to seat children 13 or younger next to their parent or accompanying adult for free.
