How The Government Shutdown May Impact Travel

With the government shutdown October 1, 2025, travelers should be aware of potential impacts to their travel plans.  Here is what travelers should know right now:

Airport Security
Federal workers involved in air travel are considered essential, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).  Security screening officers will continue to work, but travelers may experience longer airport security lines.  Travelers should arrive for their flight earlier in preparation for longer security lines.

Air Traffic Control (ATC)
Air traffic controllers are also considered essential, so ATC should technically operate normally.  However, there is currently a shortage of ATC workers, so the shutdown may exacerbate the problem as training of new air traffic controllers will be disrupted.

Flight Delays
There will be a higher risk of flight delays, especially at smaller or remote airports.  Travelers should monitor their flight and airport for the most up-to-date information.

Passport and Trusted Traveler Services
Passport services are considered essential and will also continue during the shutdown.  Trusted Traveler programs are also expected to continue processing applications.  However, delays in processing are expected as some passport offices will be closed if they are located in a building run by a shuttered government agency.

Border Crossings
Border crossings will remain open during the shutdown – Border Patrol is deemed essential.  Expect delays as staffing might be reduced.

Travel One recommends travelers monitor their flight and airport operations.  Be prepared to arrive early if the TSA website indicates long lines and/or delayed screening.  Travel One will continue to monitor this situation and send updates if any of these areas change significantly.

As always, please contact your Travel One Account Manager with the most current Information.
